Pra Frente, Brasil begins in 1970, the year the Brazilian national team won the World Cup in Mexico and the country was going through one of the most violent periods of the military dictatorship.
The sporting euphoria, intensified by television broadcasts and appropriated by official propaganda, coexisted with censorship, political persecution, torture and disappearances.
The video brings these layers together without reconstituting a historical episode in a linear way.
The march that gives the work its title — transformed into an emblem of national optimism and of the promise of movement toward the future — returns as ambiguous matter.
Football, television, music and propaganda occupy the same field of images, revealing how collective celebration can also produce consensus and conceal violence.
Made for Encontros na Ilha, a project of the 9ª Bienal do Mercosul, the work departs from Ilha da Pólvora, in Porto Alegre, also known as Ilha do Presídio.
