Feira de Ciências
Photography, video and installation · 2014
Feira de Ciências draws on the universe of school experiments, natural history museums, technical manuals and devices of scientific observation.
Photographs, videos, objects and exhibition structures are brought together as elements of a laboratory that does not intend to reproduce the scientific method, but to observe how it produces ways of seeing, classifying and believing.
The artist displaces instruments, images and procedures from their original contexts to construct situations in which evidence loses its stability.
An experiment, a diorama, a model or a technical photograph may function as tools of knowledge, but also as fictions organized by visual conventions, framing choices and modes of presentation.
Romy describes this displacement as a "magical transmutation": when an image changes field, its function, its value and the questions it can raise also change.
Between science and imagination, Feira de Ciências does not seek to oppose truth and invention.
