Carnaval dos Animais
Installation, 18 aquariums and 36 betta fish · 2015
Carnaval dos Animais brings together eighteen aquariums and thirty-six betta fish, distributed in pairs of males and females.
The proximity between the containers activates responses of display, approach and confrontation; colors, fins, movements and reflections turn the whole into a choreography that continually reorganizes itself.
The installation departs from a precise apparatus, but does not produce an entirely predictable form.
The artist defines the number of aquariums, their arrangement, the conditions of observation and the relations of proximity between the animals.
The design that is revealed, however, depends on living organisms: each displacement alters the visual field of the work and makes duration a central dimension of the experience.
Between observation, spectacle and risk, Carnaval dos Animais displaces to the exhibition space a situation in which authorship and control are necessarily shared.
