Bombrasil

Bombrasil stems from an investigation into the Brazilian nuclear program developed in secret during the military dictatorship.
To carry out the project, Romy Pocztaruk researched the archives of the Comissão Nacional de Energia Nuclear and visited the nuclear power plants of Angra dos Reis, as well as the Argonauta Reactor, in Rio de Janeiro.
Photographs produced in these places are articulated with documents, pedagogical materials and institutional images.
The research also incorporates posters made from advertisements published in newspapers after redemocratization, when it became public that Brazil had maintained a parallel nuclear program aimed at producing the atomic bomb.
By displacing these images from the newspaper page to the exhibition space, the artist brings advertising language close to historical revelation: the news, once subject to the brief time of the press, returns as a graphic image of a threatening promise of power.
The exhibition design takes as its reference the Atoms for Peace campaign and exhibitions, a North American program launched in the 1950s to promote atomic energy as a force of progress and peace.
